Almost four in ten Aussies fear app failure can ruin Christmas

By CISCO

GUEST RESEARCH:  As more consumers rely on digital applications for all aspects of life, from banking and shopping to entertainment and communication, they fear failures can generate frustration and even spoil their festivities this year.

New research from Cisco AppDynamics released this December reveals that 39% of Australians say application failures could ruin their Christmas or holiday festivities in 2023. Almost one in five (18%) went further, stating they would feel stressed, angry, and anxious about technological problems.

Over half of Australians (52%) believe that applications have become so ingrained in their lives that they are critical to ensuring an enjoyable holiday period and Christmas.

Despite the already widespread reliance on apps, 47% also say they intend to use them even more during this year's holiday than last year.

Most Australians (74%) will use entertainment applications to listen to music or stream their favourite shows during the end-of-year period, while 65% expect to rely on apps for last-minute gift shopping or gathering ingredients and recipes for cooking.

The same number (65%) of consumers also anticipate using online financial services to make unexpected payments or transfers.

Users classify entertainment, banking, communication, and shopping apps as the most critical to ensure a smooth Christmas and holiday festivities.

When asked which app failures they fear most, 62% of consumers in Australia say banking is their top concern, followed by messaging (51%) and shopping (37%) apps. This suggests many users worry about being unable to access money or make transfers when necessary or not being able to coordinate and deal with urgent matters around the end-of-the-year parties.

More than four in ten (45%) say music and streaming apps are the most critical for avoiding frustrations during the festivities. Similarly, many say they rely on messaging (40%) and shopping (39%) apps to ensure their events run as planned.

The data indicates that an increasing number of users rely on applications to play their parties' soundtracks or for entertainment, in addition to more practical actions, such as communication and coordination.

According to the survey, the Christmas spirit won't make consumers more forgiving of failures. The expectation of enjoying this period of the year without hassle actually makes users less inclined to overlook companies' mistakes.

Of those interviewed, 44% affirm they won't be able to forgive an application that lets them down during this period, and one in five (20%) say they will delete the app for good if they encounter serious issues.
