AppDynamics Cloud integrates with Grafana to add key metrics for dashboards

March 22 2023

AppDynamics Cloud releases the first (and only) vendor provided free plugin for GrafanaⓇ OSS.

Widely adopted by DevOps, SREs and developers, Grafana has become the go-to dashboarding tool among users—including our own internal teams. As such, Cisco AppDynamics has expanded support and use cases for Grafana by building an open-source integration for AppDynamics Cloud customers, absolutely free of charge!

Visualize data from AppDynamics Cloud with Grafana

This new plugin, with minimum effort, enables you to visualize pertinent performance data from AppDynamics Cloud by leveraging open source Grafana instances via a local, Dockerfile or KubernetesⓇ installation of Grafana. Once installed, the AppDynamics Cloud tenant connects to Grafana using service principals, and users can immediately gain value by leveraging pre-built dashboards that can be fully customizable, enabling data visualization, which leads to issue notification.

Integration powered by Unified Query Language (UQL)

Currently supporting metrics queries, the integration is powered by UQL, the native query language used by Cisco AppDynamics, which enables AppDynamics Cloud customers to support queries made by and visualize responses in, Grafana.

Default dashboards and dynamic linking

With this release, users gain access to four dashboards powered by pre-built UQL, showcasing different functionalities offered by Grafana queries that provide a quick jump start to users. In addition, the integration delivers dashboards that showcase functionality such as dynamic linking, which allows users to generate specific queries which will drill down into that exact entity, without changing context, within AppDynamics Cloud.

Four dashboards available deliver unique visibility capabilities:

  1. AppDynamics Kubernetes monitoring: key cluster related information with further filtering down to pod and container level.
  2. AppDynamics application performance monitoring (APM): all key information related to a service.
  3. AWS host overview: an overview of all EC2 hosts being monitored with health-based filters.
  4. AWS host details: detailed information about a host.

New Grafana plugin for AppDynamics Cloud encourages users to explore the possibilities:

AppDynamics Cloud users can leverage pre-built dashboards to build custom Grafana dashboards.

Assisted Query Workflow

The AppDynamics Cloud Grafana plugin is deployed with an assisted query workflow builder that empowers users to expand and build new dashboards for different use cases using UQL.

Cisco AppDynamics: the only vendor providing a free Grafana OSS plugin

This seamless integration with a Grafana environment is made possible for AppDynamics Cloud users without up-leveling to enterprise Grafana. By deploying our plugin on any OSS Grafana instance locally, AppDynamics Cloud users have the power of simple dashboarding at their fingertips, allowing for centralizing many different environments and taking advantage of the depth only AppDynamics Cloud can provide, leading to an adaptive, predictive and scalable observability solution.
