This week, Salesforce is seeking to revolutionize the online healthcare market, Microsoft and VMware shake hands, the Internet of Things analytics advance, and retail growth looks to mobile.

IBM just signed a brilliant deal with ARM to ‘watch’ billions of devices on the Internet – Business Insider, September 3

IBM and ARM are teaming up to accelerate the delivery of Internet of Things (IoT) analytics. The partnership will integrate IBM’s IoT technology platform (IoT Foundation) with ARM’s embed-enabled devices. Integrating these two technologies will allow for companies to monitor and analyze data from millions of devices on the internet. The partnership is an extension of ARM’s current IoT team, mBed, who are currently working on developing an IoT operating system.

Key takeaway: The Internet of Things allows us to connect and understand things in a completely new way. This partnership will allow for further advancement in the development of IoT by determining a system that collects, tracks, analyzes and interprets the large amount of data that will be produced. Imagine a morning when your alarm clock goes off and then informs your coffee pot to start brewing— IoT has the potential to do just that.

How App Performance Impacts Customer Loyalty – Total Retailer, September 2

Nowadays, global consumers are offered a multitude of purchasing options and are given the ability to connect with brands on a variety of different platforms. When it comes to buying habits, however, one thing is certain: brand experiences matter. The findings of a recent survey conducted by Atomik Research further confirmed the importance browser and mobile app performance are for retailer success. If an app fails to function properly when a consumer needs it, not only will the retailer lose its customer, but the overall perception of a brand will be altered.

Key takeaway: As applications become increasingly more complex, retailers are faced with the challenge to ensure a seamless application performance, while providing convenience to its customers. Adopting application monitoring systems to analyze performance issues and implementing influencers, such as GPS sensors to personalize the purchasing journey, creates convenience for a customer. But remember, while performance and convenience are imperative to the success of an application, brands must not lose sight of what is most important— the customer.

Salesforce wants to revolutionize your healthcare experience – Fortune, September 2

Salesforce is jumping into the world of healthcare. The software company announced on Wednesday its launch of Health Cloud, a platform to better manage patient relationships across caregiver networks. The system will help medical providers improve patient relationships through a universal dashboard that will provide medical records, integrate data from wearables, track patient conditions and various care information to patients through mobile applications. The system would allow for various medical professionals to easily communicate and provide comprehensive care for its patients.

Key takeaway: The challenge with healthcare IT is that most information is fixed in private systems, causing difficulties when trying to transfer data across the healthcare spectrum. This means that essential medical information could fall through the cracks. Salesforce Health Cloud hopes to prevent that from happening by working with various medical IT systems to integrate outside systems into one single database. If Salesforce can pull this off, the healthcare experience will improve immensely.

Richer or faster? – Internet Retailer, September 1

Growth in mobile commerce continues to skyrocket. For retailers looking to capture that growth, their success depends on how well they balance two key components— content and performance. As a mobile retailer, do you choose content over speed or speed over content? While both influencers are equally important to user experience, online retailers need to understand both approaches to be successful in the mobile commerce world.

Key takeaway: There is no simple formula or secret sauce to guarantee a successful mobile commerce experience. What may work for one online retailer may not work for another. Mobile retailers should conduct mobile measurements (using the megabyte math) and constantly test and tweak the strategy based on what your users want.

Microsoft just buried the hatchet with another one of its huge rivals: VMware – Business Insider, September 1

VMware kicked off its annual conference in San Francisco this week by announcing a shocking new partnership with Microsoft. Their project, dubbed Project A2, will improve efficiency between the two companies’ technologies. A combination of VMware’s device management service Airwatch and its App Volumes application delivery software will help businesses better manage their corporate applications with Windows 10. This partnership will allow IT departments better manage Windows devices by focusing on not just the machine, but on the applications for both virtual and physical desktops.

Key takeaway: Project A2 will allow enterprises to move their applications from a device to the cloud easily, making it easier to manage and monitor for performance. The goal? To make Windows the most easily managed and seamlessly run the device on the market.

Enterprise Software Spending to Grow: Gartner – Wall Street Journal, August 27

Gartner Inc. recently reported that global spending on enterprise application software will reach $149.9 billion, growing an estimated 7.5% this year. The report forecasted total spending to increase further within the next few years, reaching $201 billion by 2019.

Key takeaways from the report:

  • The market segments with the highest growth rate included marketing, e-commerce, and advanced analytics software
  • More than half of businesses will integrate office system proficiency from the cloud
  • The majority of spending will be put towards innovation, expanding or replacing older applications with cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS)
  • SaaS applications will make up an estimated 28% of installed human capital management systems
