Green Mountain Power chooses AppDynamics to monitor NetApp environment

Green Mountain Power (GMP) transmits, distributes and sells electricity in the state of Vermont, serving more than 250,000 customers. GMP is focused on providing its customers with a balance of the most reliable, affordable, smart and clean electricity, in an effort to be the best small utility in the United States.

Challenge: New infrastructure required more sophisticated monitoring tools

GMP introduced NetApp data storage systems to their existing Oracle databases operating in a VMware and Linux environment. While each part of the infrastructure had its own monitoring tools, there was no single tool that could provide information about overall system performance.

The GMP team wanted an application performance management (APM) solution that delivered a consolidated view across the whole server stack. It also wanted to quickly identify any issues across the Oracle and NetApp data storage devices and correlate all necessary diagnostic information into one clear view. To be successful, the solution had to support cluster-mode as well as 7-mode.

Single view of activity across multiple servers

“Buying the AppDynamics platform was one of the easiest decisions we've had to make,” said Chris Webb, Enterprise Systems Administrator at Green Mountain Power.

“The benefit of the AppDynamics solution is that it correlates data across our entire environment rather than us having to piece together information from different sources, which is what we did before,” said Webb. The AppDynamics solution allowed GMP to more easily diagnose and quickly resolve performance problems, saving time and money.

Using the AppDynamics platform, we can monitor our environment and manage issues in a proactive, rather than reactive, way.

Diagnosed and fixed system performance problems faster

The AppDynamics solution monitored NetApp systems in real-time and made a significant difference in the time it took to discover and fix bottlenecks, allowing GMP to get ahead of the performance curve and more rapidly resolve pending storage, server and database issues.

By getting to the root cause of problems faster we are providing our customers with a better experience, and a better customer experience is worth investing in.

“Using the AppDynamics platform we can monitor our environment and manage issues in a proactive rather than a reactive way,” said Webb. The AppDynamics solution provided information that helped GMP prevent potential issues. The performance reporting also allowed GMP to see daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly trends, providing greater insight for future planning.

“By getting to the root cause of problems faster we are providing our customers with a better experience,” said Webb. “And a better customer experience is worth investing in.”
