Humanis reduces MTTR from 4 hours to less than 30 minutes with AppDynamics

Humanis is a healthcare insurance provider in France with nearly 10 million people protected under its policies. Customers of Humanis rely on its extranet application to access their confidential information and contracts. This application is built on a very distributed and complex architecture, with many remote calls to web services and other application components.

Challenge: Limited visibility into distributed calls

“Troubleshooting performance issues was difficult because we had no visibility into where users' requests went?we would hear a complaint about the front-end application, but we had no idea which application component on the backend was responsible for the poor performance,” said Yves Nicole, Architect at Humanis. “This lack of visibility meant that we would spend 4 hours on average troubleshooting a single incident.”

One incident, which involved several critical application components, caused Humanis to rethink its approach to application performance. “We had a major crisis that took us five days to resolve, mostly because we couldn't find where the problem was occurring,” said Nicole. “After that, we decided to take two actions: 1) Begin to rethink and rework the architecture of our applications to improve performance, and 2) Find a way to locate and diagnose issues much faster. For the second, the most obvious solution was to begin looking at application performance management solutions.”

Immediate results with the AppDynamics Platform

Nicole found the AppDynamics platform while at Devoxx Paris, a conference for Java developers. At the event, he saw a demonstration of the solution and noted at first glance, “the product was very impressive.”

He requested and installed the free trial from AppDynamics to try the platform out for Humanis, and wasn't disappointed.

Out of the box, with no tuning at all, we were able to locate some performance issues related to SQL requests in just 10 minutes. Impressive.

“Out of the box, with no tuning at all, we were able to locate some performance issues related to SQL requests in just 10 minutes,” he said. “Impressive.”

With such immediate benefit demonstrated in the trial, Humanis soon deployed the platform on all of its production applications.

Cut MTTR from hours to minutes

Since installing the AppDynamics platform, Nicole said that the company's MTTR has decreased significantly. “The production team is now able to find and diagnose a problem in less than 30 minutes, which is a big improvement.”

In addition, developers at Humanis are using the AppDynamics platform in their QA environment to help them understand how their code performs during load tests. “Our developers really appreciate the AppDynamics solution because it allows them to test the response time of web services and observe the impact of a load test on all the different application components.”

The AppDynamics platform has helped IT teams at Humanis to do their jobs better. “We're working on improving our application architecture to improve performance,” said Nicole. “The AppDynamics platform gives us the visibility we need to see immediate results?now we can solve problems much faster than before.”
