AppDynamics Adds Business iQ to Its App iQ Platform

Application intelligence software provider AppDynamics beefed up its App iQ platform today with the addition of Business iQ, a performance engine designed to help business leaders drive results by providing them with quick access to in-app end user behavioral data.

With the emergence of technologies and user experiences that are powered by artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), conversational UX, and the like, the business world has entered "the next phase of digital transformation," says Matt Chotin, head of product marketing at AppDynamics. And as people gain more ways of points of engagement, the enterprise must operate at an astonishing velocity  to deliver experiences that keep them satisfied. This requires that they rapidly, and frequently, develop innovative software that meets growing expectations. However, because of a disconnect from IT, business owners aren't usually aware of the impact technological adjustments, updates, and releases have on their businesses until it's too late. "Because they're fickle, [customers are] not going to stick around if things go wrong," Chotin warns. What's needed is "tremendous partnerships between IT and the business," he says.

Business iQ is designed to give CIOs and business leaders access to a common language that enables them to oversee operations in real time. The tool combines application monitoring with business monitoring functions and places them in communication on one platform, giving firms access to what AppDynamics calls a quicker "Mean Time to Business Awareness" (MBTA).

Included in the engine is a monitoring function that applies machine learning to browser and mobile-based user session data to identify specific business outcomes. With the capability, says Chotin, companies can better troubleshoot performance issues, analyze conversion funnels, and conduct advanced segmentation by drawing on business data.

Business iQ's Query Language capabilities filter complex sets of data to help companies calculate various metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs), such as the percentage of revenue attributed to a particular product category. Mathematical operators can be applied to numeric fields and aggregations, granting users the ability to draw their own metrics. A filter command enables intelligent segmentation within each query.

The Funnel Analysis tool enables a "performance-driven view of conversions," Chotin says. It allows users to better visualize their funnels, as it creates KPIs related to bounce rates, conversion rates, and customer abandonments that occur during critical steps of their journeys. Businesses "have the ability to build that tied to [their] application performance," he says, and compare the expected results to the actions recorded in the funnel.

Business iQ is available as part of AppDynamics' fall 2016 release and complements a host of other engines, including Map iQ, Baseline iQ, Diagnostic iQ, Signal iQ, and Enterprise iQ.

With App iQ, "what we were already providing was this great tool for IT operations professionals and DevOps to understand the health of their applications and performance impact, and do it in such a way where they knew what was important to the business, purely from a performance standpoint," Chotin says. "Now, with Business iQ, we are able to empower the IT organization to provide new levels of awareness through the line of business, through the CIO, so they know exactly what's happening with the business and are leveraging all the data that IT had access to and presenting it in a way that is of new benefit to the business, so that the business is able to make better decisions faster."

Business iQ is available as part of the new AppDynamics Peak Editions, which are available today, in three offerings: APM Peak Edition, Real User Monitoring Peak Edition, and Infrastructure Visibility Peak Edition. They are compatible with public, private, and hybrid cloud environments.
