Boeing Employees Credit Union Banks On AppDynamics To Gain Full Visibility Into Its Complex, Distributed .NET Applications

Press Release

  • End-to-end visibility and control of application intelligence helps the credit union improve service levels to its members

  • Proactive application management capabilities and enthusiastic adoption by both development and operations teams are cited as key benefits

SAN FRANCISCO – September 23, 2015 – AppDynamics, a leading application intelligence company, today announced that Boeing Employees Credit Union (BECU), a not-for-profit financial cooperative with more than 925,000 members, has selected AppDynamics for its application intelligence solution. With the AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform, both BECU’s development and operation teams gain deep levels of visibility into the performance of the credit union’s Microsoft-powered software stack. What’s more, credit union members obtain higher levels of customer service across the board.

In efforts to maximize the financial well-being of its members, BECU offers services that include everything from loans and online banking to practical money management tools. The credit union takes pride in making these services as convenient as possible, with anytime-anywhere website and mobile application access, as well as local financial centers and ATMs in neighborhoods throughout Washington state. Members can also access BECU services through a network of more than 5,000 partner credit union locations and 30,000 ATMs nationwide.

However, there are technical challenges that come with providing readily accessible financial services on such a grand scale. In particular, as BECU’s .NET application stack grew to accommodate new services, ever-expanding membership rolls, and a larger local and national presence, the BECU environment had to embrace software provided by third-party vendors. The result was a distributed environment containing a complex mix of custom and external software.

“The AppDynamics solution lets us view the performance behavior of our internal application stacks, as well as monitor and manage third-party application performance,” said Dan Klemetsen, BECU’s director of IT production. “With AppDynamics alerts and reports, we can isolate the exact source of latency and provide the diagnostic data necessary to help our web services vendors fix slowdowns on their end. We can identify trouble spots anywhere in the distributed environment, long before they impact service delivery,” he added.

Prior to the AppDynamics Intelligence Platform implementation, the BECU technical staff had to sift through reams of log data from multiple applications and locations to diagnose errors and performance degradation. As BECU membership grew and traffic and complexity increased, this proved to be an extremely time-consuming, tedious, and altogether untenable approach.

So, after qualifying various application intelligence providers, including Dynatrace, BECU chose AppDynamics as its Unified Monitoring platform. Reaching a consensus became easy during the initial proof-of-value testing phase prior to purchasing the AppDynamics solution, during which the BECU team immediately gained key insights into flaws throughout their application stack. Other reasons the team cited for choosing the AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform include:

  • Ease of installation and configuration

  • A user interface that is far more intuitive than competitive products

  • End-to-end visibility and scalability

  • Both on-premise and SaaS options for complete flexibility

With AppDynamics, the BECU team has been able to replace its traditional, after-the-fact means of diagnosing performance problems with a proactive Application Intelligence Platform that monitors its distributed application stack. In addition, the BECU team can avoid having performance problems emerge in production by gaining visibility into application issues before they are released.

“We are really pleased that the Boeing Employees Credit Union is gaining such tremendous value from the AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform,” said AppDynamics’ founder and CEO, Jyoti Bansal. “We look forward to working with BECU to continue to provide the application intelligence that enables them to deliver critically important financial services in ways that impress and delight their members.”

The AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform is a comprehensive solution enabling companies and government entities to maximize business and application performance. The platform is designed and architected to help give business and government users the confidence that their applications are running at their best, to give IT personnel the operational visibility and control they need, and to give end users the great experiences they’ve come to expect and demand.
