Struts Performance Monitoring

Apache Struts 2 is an open-source web application framework for developing Java EE (Enterprise Edition) web applications. Using an MVC (Model-View-Control) architecture, Struts enables developers to work on discrete tasks from each of the three UI components and then verify them in a simple, clear manner. Struts comes with a prodigious feature set that includes asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) support, POJO (Plain Old Java Objects) forms and actions, enhanced tagging support, seamless integration with the Spring framework, integrated profiling, and intelligent defaults, among others. It’s also extensible using plugin architecture and comes with plugins to support REST, AJAX, and JSON out of the box.

Monitor business transactions on Struts

Struts framework applications, instrumented with AppDynamics Java agents, are auto-discovered and shows up in AppDynamics. Business transactions are automatically discovered with out-of-the-box configurations as seen in the application dashboard.

Shown here is a sample snapshot of a Struts-based business transaction within AppDynamics. AppDynamics captures drill down details for users to deep dive into components making the Struts calls. In this case, the user can drill down into the 'LoginServer' component of the application.

Continuing from the sample above, drilling down into the 'LoginServer' shows various detailed information about the Struts calls including a call graph where users can inspect the actual calls and timings of each call within their application code.

Struts metrics aggregation

AppDynamics captures information on Struts framework communications as metrics for average response time, calls per minute and errors per minute. These metrics are also aggregated into node, tier, and application level along with other types of transactions, if any, to give users an overall performance status at each of those levels.
