Mohegan Sun Bets on AppDynamics and Improves Speed of Online Business Transactions 5X

Press Release

  • Platform provides enterprise-level visibility into the casino’s highly complex distributed environment

  • Ease of use and deployment, intelligent automation and AppDynamics’ position as a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for application performance management three years in a row cited as top decision factors

  • Only solution with the ability to automatically tag and trace business transactions — considered a “huge” factor

San Francisco – November 11, 2015 –AppDynamics, a leading application intelligence company, today announced that Mohegan Sun, one of the largest entertainment and gaming destinations in the United States, has selected AppDynamics for application performance management (APM) of its distributed software development and production environment. The AppDynamics deployment across a highly complex and heterogenous environment is already delivering significant performance improvements — in some cases by a factor of five — to improve customer experience and engagement with Mohegan’s gaming and loyalty applications. The platform is also being leveraged to boost efficiency, and thereby reduce costs, for backend operations.

The AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform is helping Mohegan Sun deliver on its digital transformation initiatives by providing extraordinary visibility into the performance of distributed IBM WebSphere applications and custom-developed Java, XML, and .NET applications. Mohegan Sun’s disparate heterogeneous systems run gaming applications, the casino bank, hotel management, entertainment ticketing, customer loyalty programs and overall business operations for its casino resort in Connecticut, as well as Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs located in eastern Pennsylvania.

George Lee, lead application architect at Mohegan Sun, understands the value of quickly diagnosing and troubleshooting issues related to distributed systems. “With a service-oriented architecture, you have many different components and you're only as good as your weakest link,” Lee said. “Whether you’re dealing with database issues, a faulty connection from one state to another, or interaction issues between pieces of code, distributed applications can cause problems for our customers.”

Mohegan Sun was in the midst of a major software deployment and testing phase using an infrastructure monitoring product that was built to monitor infrastructure, but not applications. Lee and his team had just completed a system-of-records upgrade and a loyalty program migration. In addition, they were about to release 20 new Java applications into production.

“We looked at APM product selection from the perspective of what we could acquire without a ton of configuration, maintenance, and manual labor,” Lee stated. “When we peeled the covers off the different products, AppDynamics best fit the bill. Plus, AppDynamics was the only solution of the group with the intelligence to find the business transactions automatically, which was huge.”

AppDynamics enabled the Mohegan Sun team to quickly identify critical code-level issues. “Within an hour of going live with AppDynamics, we were able to track and fix problems before customers even noticed them,” Lee said. Mohegan Sun also praised the performance and versatility of the AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform. “It increases performance on slow-running transactions by a factor of five, and even allows us to monitor and troubleshoot a partner’s Apache Tomcat server that interacts with our back-end systems. ” added Lee.

Jyoti Bansal, founder and chairman of AppDynamics sees great similarities between Mohegan Sun and other software-dependent businesses. “Mohegan Sun is using software to automate processes and services typically performed by its staff. When complex systems slow down or fail, there are rarely adequate personnel to perform these tasks or ensure proper customer service,” Bansal said. “We are pleased to be working closely with customer-focused companies such as Mohegan Sun, as they execute on their digital transformation initiatives. ”

The AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform is a comprehensive solution helping enable companies to maximize business performance. The platform is designed and architected to give business users the confidence that their business is running at its best, to give IT the operational visibility and control they need, and to give end users the great experiences they’ve come to expect and demand.
