AppDynamics Named "Cool Vendor" by Leading Analyst Firm

Press Release

Vendors Selected for the "Cool Vendors in IT Operations Management” Report are Innovative, Impactful and Intriguing

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – April 5, 2010 – AppDynamics, the next-generation Application Performance Management (APM) company, today announced that it has been included in the list of “Cool Vendors” in the “Cool Vendors in IT Operations Management” report (Will Cappelli, April 1, 2010) by Gartner, Inc.

According to the Gartner, Inc., report, “User-defined transaction profiling, application component deep-dive monitoring and application component discovery and modeling are three distinct dimensions of APM.  Using technologies supporting the first dimension, one can quickly determine the space/time coordinates of an application performance problem’s source.  Using the second dimension, one can look deeply into that source and diagnose the problem that is actually occurring.” 1

Gartner defines a cool vendor as a company that offers technologies or solutions that are: Innovative, enable users to do things they couldn’t do before; Impactful, have, or will have, business impact (not just technology for the sake of technology); Intriguing, have caught Gartner’s interest or curiosity in approximately the past six months.

According to Gartner, “By year-end 2014, the majority of APM vendors will offer runtime application discovery modeling tools that combine IT service dependency mapping, user-defined transaction profiling and business process modeling functionalities.” 2

“Gartner’s report outlines the three distinct dimensions of APM, which align very closely with our product strategy and with what we hear from customers every day,” said Steve Roop, AppDynamics vice president of Marketing.  “As applications have become more distributed, service-oriented and dynamic, IT Operations needs performance visibility that enables them to drill from the 30,000-foot application and business transaction view to the 2-inch code-level diagnostic view seamlessly.  We’re pleased with Gartner’s recognition, which we believe is for our fresh approach to application management.”

Specifically, AppDynamics has demonstrated that the three functionalities Gartner states are required are critical for diagnosing and troubleshooting applications in today’s highly distributed and service oriented environments.  Among other things, AppDynamics’ market traction and growth are based on the following functionalities:

Application Mapping – AppDynamics dynamically discovers all application tiers and back-end services, even when agile development introduces new code.  AppDynamics provides a visual map of the distributed applications to illuminate application topology for IT Operations.

Transaction Flow Monitoring – AppDynamicsprovides visibility into how each transaction performs as it journeys along the distributed environment, a technique that enables IT Operations to be extremely precise in troubleshooting problems.  Measuring infrastructure and application component health is no longer sufficient to effectively ensure service quality.  AppDynamics measures the health of what matters to the business – the business transaction.

Deep Diagnostics – AppDynamics’ Deep Diagnostics enables rapid root cause analysis.  It delivers deep diagnostics in an “always on” capacity, delivering class and method-level detail without introducing excess overhead in production environments.

AppDynamics distinguishes itself from other APM vendors through its ability to easily and accurately manage distributed applications in high-volume production environments, and has contributed to the success of key customers such as Priceline.com and Yap.  AppDynamics offers specific capabilities that are required for a “next generation” APM solution, including  cloud orchestration, application mapping, transaction flow monitoring, and code-level diagnostics.
