5 Reasons Tech Leaders Should Attend AppD Summit Europe

“Technology remains key to business success.”

This statement comes from the 19th Annual Global CEO Survey which was conducted by PwC. It’s a simple, yet incredibly loaded and exciting statement for anyone working in enterprise IT. It’s also the reason why we have a whole track at our free tech conference on May 3rd, 2017, in London, devoted to “How to Become a World-Class Tech Leader.” Being a tech leader today isn’t easy, and here’s a summary of why:

  • While technology is key, it’s only the underpinning of a digital service, a service that must provide benefits to either a customer, consumer, or employee. Artificial intelligence, IoT, and machine learning will no doubt bring benefits of convenience, making usage or consumption more natural, but it’s important to take an outside-in approach to designing and building new digital services. This means that tech leaders should always put the customer, consumer, or employee first and it’s why user or customer experience is so important.

  • Software applications underpin technology services or initiatives, but the complexity of building and delivering applications is rising fast — from dynamic coding languages and microservices architecture, to taking a platform approach to applications in order to allow  easy integration via APIs to other applications. All of these dramatically increase build and delivery speed but conversely create complex ecosystems of applications. This means control and visibility over performance is becoming increasingly difficult but extremely important for world-class tech leaders.

  • Only focusing on the delivery of technology and applications doesn’t equal business success. Every enterprise today has a website and mobile app, so just having an app is not enough. In order to drive success, today’s tech leaders must be metric and data-driven, looking for marginal gains to improve user (customer or employee) experience in order to drive business outcomes of revenue and customer loyalty. This means that the best tech leaders must have an instant view on whether software applications and tech are driving business value.

While these reasons are extensive, they don’t even touch on the people and process challenges a leader will also face. This is why this track is so important.

We’ve crafted the sessions so that we cover as much as we can, in one day, to provide guidance and to teach professionals what it takes to become an enterprise technology leader today. He has published leading research on digital business, social media, business strategy, innovation, retail, and marketing and is often quoted in both trade and mainstream media. In his session, he’ll outline what skills and team structures are required for digital business success.

  4. Discuss tech trends with Victoria Woollaston, Digital Editor at WIRED, and Daniel Franklin, Executive Editor at The Economist. Victoria is a believer in singularity, or the hypothesis that the invention of artificial intelligence will accelerate technological innovation and bring about major changes to human civilisation. Daniel is the the author of MegaTech, which focuses on where technology will take us by 2050. In this panel session, expect a lively debate as an AppDynamics executive leads the conversation. Discover a smarter approach to driving business and application performance

Recognised the need for APM in your organisation, but need guidance on starting right?

Then “Best Practices with APM” makes sense for you. This track covers the essential APM principles and looks at the critical first 180 days of becoming an AppDynamics user. A combination of customers, engineers, and consultants share their perspectives around key APM success factors. Luke Rogers helps us start at the very beginning, in building a rock-solid business case for investing in APM in the first place, by focusing on the initial challenges faced, mapping metrics to what matters to key stakeholders, and outlining a clear path to real value. Once you have funding and are at the onboarding stage, what next? A leading financial services company explains how they rolled out and evangelised APM to key teams, what worked and what didn’t, and perhaps most importantly, how AppDynamics supported genuine changes in process and organisation. The fact that implementation coincided with the Brexit vote makes the story even more interesting, given the vote’s effect on financial markets.

Business Transactions are one of the main reasons customers choose AppDynamics, but how do you discover and configure them for maximum benefit? Aware of the buzz around containers, cloud, automation, and of course, DevOps?

Join the “Deliver the Modern Software Stack” track, which separates the facts from the hype with a series of sessions designed to give you a no-nonsense overview of latest developments in the way applications are built, released, and managed. Stephen Thair of boutique consultancy DevOpsGuys highlights the double-edged sword that is automation — managed correctly it can bring huge benefits, but there are pitfalls along the way which he’ll highlight in his usual entertaining and provocative style. APM may not be immediately thought of as a core DevOps supporting technology, but Andrew Kretschmer and Lenro Meyer from Standard Bank in South Africa will explain the major importance of AppDynamics to a leading bank in the midst of a DevOps adoption, and using many components of the modern software stack.

Container technologies such as Docker are one of the dominant stories of the last two years, and their rapid adoption has made a huge impact on speed and flexibility for enterprise applications. We’re pleased to have leading container expert Liz Rice explain what containers really are, and how you can manage and orchestrate them. Meanwhile, cloud adoption has now matured to the point of “how” rather than “if” for most enterprises. But the “how” is a challenging topic with numerous options, such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), provider (Amazon AWS, Azure), or build on a Platform as a Service (Paas). A major German enterprise customer will explain how IoT was the impetus to choose developing applications using Pivotal Cloud Foundry, and their major learnings on the way.

Enterprise iQ License Management Demo

At AppSphere 2016, we gave attendees a glimpse into the future of our new license management system. As we continue to grow in large enterprises and gain broader adoption across more parts of the organizations we service, our customers have asked us to help their administrators manage license entitlements more easily.

Imagine the challenge of allocating licenses across tens of thousands of application nodes for operations teams in different business units located in various parts of the world. Without the right tools, planning and predicting license utilization can quickly become tedious and time consuming.

In building a reimagined enterprise-grade license management system, we focused on ease of use, scalability, and configurability. In our demo at AppSphere 2016, we showed off a few key areas of focus.

In the newly designed license usage page, admins can see organization-wide license utilization across all agent modules in a single view. As you can see in Figure 1, we’ve selected .NET, which pops up a more detailed usage chart. When we switch the time range to a different period, all associated charts update in real-time.

Our platform is able to measure license consumption over time down to minute granularity. This is extremely useful for customers with highly volatile traffic patterns.

A large financial institution may have different teams focused on institutional banking, commercial banking, and compliance, for example. Each team has different needs in terms of technology. In our license management system, we’re able to create rules which allow you to allocate a pool of licenses for each team and get a real-time view into how these licenses are being utilized. We’ve also made it a lot easier to move licenses between teams or between agent modules.

Once a rule is created, an access key is generated. This access key can be shared with members of the team for application instrumentation.

As part of rules, we’ve added a powerful capability called Scopes, which allows admins to automatically apply rules to specific applications or machines by using regular expressions and naming conventions.

For example, if we have applications for user testing, we can prefix all of these applications with “user_test” and match this prefix as part of a scope. This applies equally to machines as well, so only machines named “user_test” will consume licenses. All of these features are critical for large enterprise deployments and make it easy for admins to manage their licenses.

AppSphere 2016 AppD Labs Demos

Bhaskar Sunkara, co-founder and CTO of AppDynamics, announced a new innovation initiative called AppD Labs during Day 2 of AppSphere 2016. It was a casual atmosphere billed as “quality engineering time”, as guests were treated to beer service upon entering the General Session. The show got started with a Q&A panel with some of the world’s largest and oldest companies about how they were tackling the issue of digital transformation. Following the panel, Prathap Dendi, General Manager, Emerging Technologies, introduced a series of forward-thinking demos from on-the-ground engineers showcasing AppDynamics innovation in taking on the new challenges of digital transformation.

Demo 1: Quick Search

Sunil Gattupalle, a software engineer from Bangalore HQ, showcased his hackathon creation that could potentially help both new and experienced users navigate the product with a greater degree of efficiency. Through periodic aggregation of the metadata provided by AppDynamics, Sunil developed a Spotlight-like search function directly into the interface. Command-F brings up a search bar and allows the user to use keywords to find direct links to navigation items like metric graphs and specific configuration screens.

Demo 2: Connected Millennials

With the advent of new smart shopping technologies, the Internet of Things team showcased how they imagine AppDynamics could play a role in bringing useful information to a retail store stakeholder. By journeying through a physical on-stage store, Balwinder Kaur, Principal Software Engineer, described how smart shelves, point of sale systems, and inventory management software could all work together to provide a single pane of analytics and performance metrics automatically. Detection of physical metrics such as shelf impressions, item take rates, and inventory stock were all shown to report to AppDynamics with rules to track the health of an in-store promotion.

Demo 3: Automated RCA

Jad Naous, Director of Architecture, demonstrated the power of combining AppDynamics baselining and relationship structures with machine learning to automate root cause analysis. After explaining every DevOps’ nightmare scenario, an interrupted lunch break with a P1 issue, Jad posed the what if: “What if the root cause could be found and reported automatically without interrupting your lunch?” Today, AppDynamics users correlate metrics and events by hand in a dashboard or in a war room view. But with the help of machine learning and baselines, Jad demonstrated how it is possible for AppDynamics to automatically traverse a causal chain of events, allowing users to resolve an issue in minutes instead of hours.

Demo 4: Conversational UX

Oliver Crameri, Principal Software Engineer, integrated AppDynamics with a few other popular DevOps tools: JIRA, PagerDuty, and Slack. However, the differentiator here was using Amazon Alexa as the tool to tie all these things together. Oliver demonstrated this new conversational UX by pulling up dashboards, reporting issues, and calling the dev on call all through voice commands. AppDynamics’ flexible APIs helped demonstrate the product’s capability in tying into any tools or 3rd-party integrations with ease.

AppSphere 2016 Demos Overview: Enterprise iQ and Business iQ

We saw many exciting demos at AppSphere 2016 which showcased new capabilities of the App iQ Platform. To pull off these live demos on stage, numerous cross functional teams put in months of planning and weeks of setup and rehearsal to make sure each demo was delivered successfully.

Enterprise iQ: AppDynamics Improves Enterprise APM Support

Years ago, “enterprise” for us meant any customers with ~10,000 agents in production. Today, we’re supporting customers that are scaling up to ~100,000 agents. It’s no surprise that more and more companies are adopting a micro services approach to delivering software. Administering thousands of agents and nodes is no easy task, but with Enterprise iQ we’re making it simple and configurable.

Demo: Universal Agent

The first demo at AppSphere focused on our Universal Agent which is a small package that can be installed on a server with a simple shell command. The Universal Agent discovers environment variables and processes which it reports back to an AppDynamics controller which in turn issues commands back to the agent.

The Universal Agent can install and update agents automatically and works with npm, rpm, puppet, chef, or even your own private repositories. In the demo, we showed how Universal Agent set up AppDynamics for a standard Java Tomcat application. We also showed how easy it is to upgrade an agent from an old version of AppDynamics to a new one. Once agents are installed they automatically begin reporting performance metrics to AppDynamics.

Demo: License Management

The second demo was all about our new enterprise focused license management system. We’ve added new visualizations which help customers instantly see exactly how their licenses are being utilized. For example, we can view Java license consumption over time with minute granularity. This makes it easy to know when certain micro services need more licenses.

As part of our new Enterprise iQ license management system, we can now deploy license entitlements with different access keys. This allows us to control the number of agents consumed by a given key. If you’re a large financial institution you can now carve out specific licenses for different business units.

We’ve also added scopes to Enterprise iQ which are powerful rules that use regular expressions and naming conventions. For example, we can use scopes to make sure that only certain machines used for user acceptance testing may consume licenses. Scopes can be saved and used over and over. No more calling and chasing people down who have used up too many licenses!

Demo: Network Visibility

One of the most exciting new features announced was network visibility which is currently a black box for many APM solutions. At AppSphere we showed how our customers can now shine a light onto the black box of network performance and begin measuring throughput through all of their systems.

Our network visibility dashboard does not rely on SPAN & TAP methods. Instead we monitor ingress and egress traffic by marrying the five-tuple of source and destination IP and port, as well as protocol. Once you toggle the network dashboard you will see an overlay of the underlying net flow data and key performance indicators such as bandwidth, packet loss, and throughput.

Demo: Business iQ

Last but not least, we showed a demo of Business iQ that walked customers through each and every step of the creation of a business-focused dashboard. First we turned on analytics and added a data collector. Data collectors allow you to specify classes and methods to collect parameter and return values.

Once we have data collectors turned on we can begin to create metrics for anything we can think of. Once a metric is built we can create health rules to alert us when something strays from baseline.

As part of Business iQ we also showed a new and improved funnel widget that includes conversion rate and abandon rate. All of these new features are part of Fall ‘16 and make it easier for IT to begin driving business outcomes.

Life in the digital transformation

Maybe you don’t gamble, but imagine you’re in a major Las Vegas casino feeding some dollars into a slot machine. The reels are spinning. They begin to stop one at a time:

Then suddenly, every slot machine in the place goes dark. The bleeps and rings are replaced by groans and some scattered disbelieving laughter. And then, the murmur of conversation as patrons begin to talk about the odd and frustrating situation they’re in. You hear some raised voices that match your anger as some, like you, were in the middle of a payout.

And, of course, out come the mobiles. Within minutes, their experience becomes the world’s experience.

And if you think you’re out some money that should be coming your way, imagine you’re the owner of that casino. Thousands of dollars coming in per second just turns off like a faucet due to technical issues.

Vegas is the place to be this week

Enough with this gloomy analogy. You’re probably not in the gaming industry, and also one corner of Las Vegas is going to be all about flawless performance and happy customers with today’s kick off of AppSphere™ 2016, which will run through November 17th.

This story does illustrate how high the stakes can be for your business when relying on technology to deliver superior, profitable customer experiences. But unpredictability is part of life in the digital transformation. Thankfully, application performance management technology is bringing us closer and closer to zero downtime.

A Guide to Your AppSphere Agenda: Product Deep Dives

For the second year in a row, I’ve been honored with the task of managing the Deep Dive sessions at AppSphere. This year we have some really great sessions planned. Much of the content is focused on what we’ve delivered in the last year and what’s coming up in the future for our products and solutions. The vision within the products will be well represented by a mixture of engineering and product management. Some of the highlights within the 13 sessions of this track include platform sessions and specific technology module sessions, along with some analysis of our end user experience data. Check out our session catalog for more information on Deep Dive sessions and how to start building your agenda for AppSphere 2016!

The platform sessions include an overview of our recently announced App iQ Platform. App iQ provides the underpinnings for new levels of scalability and management. App iQ Platform Support for Digital Transformation at Scale will be presented by product manager Akankshu Dhawan and Senior Engineering Manager Gautam Borah. This session will highlight some of the new changes coming to the underlying data platform and architecture, which will enable even greater scalability than the current platform can sustain. Similarly, we have several sessions focused on scaling platform deployments and management such as Mastering the Administration of Your AppDynamics Deployment, which will also be presented by Akankshu Dhawan along with Senior Engineering Manager Wei Zhao. Finally, customers always ask about managing the agents and the growing number of agents in the AppDynamics portfolio to support your expanding application estate, and we have an answer to that. Val Chibisov, Senior Product Manager, will cover our upcoming management technologies in Advanced Agent Deployment Strategies in Large Scale, Complex Environments.

AppDynamics Analytics has been undergoing a large number of changes over the last year. We have several sessions covering these changes, including AppDynamics Analytics Product Deep Dive, an overview of the product updates and path given by Group Product Manager Amod Gupta. Yet another session that goes deeper into the changes happening within the Log Analytics technology, Getting Additional Value from Logs and APM Data with AppDynamics Unified Analytics, is presented by Product Manager Nima Haddadkaveh and Senior Engineering Director Arjun Iyer.

For the other AppDynamics product modules, we’ll have a focus on end user experience monitoring in sessions such as Best Practices and Advanced Insights on Users of Browser RUM. This is an interesting session analyzing performance across the AppDynamics customer base. Led by Group Product Manager Ian Withrow, the session will also highlight differences in technology adoption and performance. We also have a session which covers the evolving synthetic technology, led by Principal Software Engineer and former Bugsense CEO and co-founder Olivier Crameri. Synthetic is a key component to an APM strategy, so make sure to attend Synthetic Monitoring Deep Dive. Finally, for those mobile application developers, we have a lot of capabilities coming in our mobile APM products and lots of best practices to share from our resident mobile expert, Senior Software Engineer Hao Liu. On the back-end side we have sessions for specific languages, including Under the Hood: Monitoring Azure and .NET, which highlights the ever-evolving .NET and Azure ecosystem, presented by Senior Product Manager Meera Viswanathan. Learn what’s new with dynamic language support in Manage Performance of Dynamic Languages: PHP 7 and Node.js v6. In this session, you’ll find out not only about the changes in these languages, but how AppDynamics supports them. This session will be led by Software Engineer Viktor Gavrielov and Senior Engineer Rakesh Kumar. The data platforms are most often the reason applications perform poorly, so learn how AppDynamics Database Monitoring technology is evolving in terms of platform support, plus additional ways to isolate root cause and support DBAs, developers, operations, and cross-functional DevOps teams. Dive Deep into Your Databases and Data Store Performance to Resolve Application Performance is presented by Database Architect Apun Hiran.

Finally, we’ve invested a lot in broadening infrastructure visibility, including some new products and technologies. Presented by Director of Product Management Harish Nataraj, our infrastructure product wizard, you’ll learn about the evolution of server visibility and how AppDynamics is building additional depth in infrastructure monitoring to enable root cause in Is Your Infrastructure Affecting Critical Business Transactions?

The final session I’d like to highlight is the ever expanding set of exposed APIs and SDKs, including our C++ SDK, which was released earlier this year. In this session, you’ll learn how to use these enhancements and where we’re going in opening instrumentation, transaction tracing, and information re-use from the App iQ platform. Use AppDynamics SDKs to Better Integrate with Your Applications is presented by Manager of Solution Architecture Stefan Marx. Here, you’ll learn how integration and extension are being achieved in the field for our largest customers.

Scaling with Containers at AppSphere 2016

Containers have grown tremendously in popularity in recent years. Originally conceived as a way to replace legacy systems completely, container technology has instead become a way to extend monolithic systems with newer, faster technology. As an example of this growth, the 2016 RightScale State of the Cloud Report™ shows Docker adoption rates in 2015 moved from thirteen percent to twenty-seven percent. Another thirty-five percent of respondents say they have plans to use Docker in the near future.

What Are Containers?

Containers allow you to move software from one environment to another without worrying about different applications, SSL libraries, network topology, storage systems, or security policies — for example, moving from a machine in your data center to a virtual environment in the cloud. They are able to do this because everything you need to run the software travels as one unit. The application, binaries, libraries, and configuration files all live together inside a single container.

You can move a container to a wide variety of software environments with no problem because the program is self-contained. In contrast, virtualization also includes the operating system. Containers share the same operating system kernel, so they are lighter and more energy-efficient than a virtual machine. Hypervisors are an abstraction of the entire machine, while containers are an abstraction of only the OS kernel.

There are a variety of container technologies to support different use cases. The most popular container technology right now is Docker. It grew rapidly a few years ago with major adoption in enterprise computing, including three of the biggest financial institutions in the world — unusual for the slow-to-adopt world of banking. Docker allows software applications to run on a large number of machines at the same time, an important quality for huge sites like Facebook that must deliver data to millions of consumers simultaneously.

Container Technologies

Recent surveys performed by DevOps.com and ClusterHQ show Docker is the overwhelming favorite in container technology at this point. One of the most talked-about competitors to Docker that has emerged recently is Rocket, an open-source project from CoreIS, which ironically was one of one of Docker’s early proponents. Backed heavily by Google, Rocket’s founders developed the technology because they thought Docker had grown and moved too far away from its original purpose. While Docker has been embraced as almost an industry standard, competitors are making inroads. Rocket’s founders say one of its strengths is that it is not controlled by a single organization.

One of the pioneers in container technology back in 2001 is a product from Parallels called Virtuozzo. It gets a lot of attention from OEMs, works well on cloud servers, and features near-instant provisioning. Other fast-growing container technologies include LXC and LVE.

Container Best Practices

One of the challenges of containers is monitoring their performance. AppDynamics is able to monitor containers using our innovative Microservices iQ. It provides automatic discovery of exit and entry service endpoints, tracks important performance indicators, and isolates the cause of performance issues.

I always look forward to seeing what’s in store for emerging technology at AppSphere. It’s been an exciting year already for all things connected, from wearables and sensors, to the enterprise ecosystem around the Internet of Things–and it’s only growing. Today, every opportunity around the Internet of Things represents the potential for exponential growth. In IDC’s Global IoT Decision Maker Survey, research found that 31.4% of companies are already working with an Internet of Things initiative, with an emphasis on cloud computing and analytics, and an additional 43% said they are looking to deploy their projects in the next year. Driving DevOps Adoption at AppSphere 2016

“DevOps is trendier than a cronut on a hoverboard.”

This is the start of one of four AppSphere 2016 best practices track session abstracts, and I couldn’t agree more with the quote above. When reviewing the many submissions from customers, there was one use case that came up again and again, and this focused on how AppDynamics helps enterprises with their DevOps adoption.

Talking to enterprises over the last five years, I’ve heard many different explanations as to what DevOps is and the benefits it brings. In my early conversations, I’d hear explanations that DevOps is about Agile software development. While it contains a part of it, DevOps is far more encompassing than this. It’s also about cultural transformation, automation, a lean approach, the right measurements, and an environment that promotes sharing or collaboration. The benefits of DevOps are clearly highlighted in Puppet’s “State Of DevOps” report, which shows that those enterprises who adopt DevOps are likely to be high performers, deploying 200 times more frequently while recovering 24 times faster from failed changes, and with three times lower fail rates. In today’s digital world where velocity is crucial to survival, these results are hard to overlook. An enterprise APM solution like AppDynamics is essential to achieving these benefits because it provides visibility into every release. It also provides a single source of truth in regards to application performance in order to influence collaboration between business, IT development, and operations teams.

Guy Duncan, Chief Technical Officer, and Markus Hraba, Chief Infrastructure Architect, will explain the challenges they face monitoring microservices in a globally dispersed enterprise, and how AppDynamics enables them to get immediate feedback of code changes and performance impact. This session will be on Tuesday, November 15th at 3:30 PM.
  • How Oceanwide, an Insurity company, built their DevOps teams around AppDynamics and how AppDynamics became the common language between development, QA, and operations. This session will also focus on how to promote and nurture the adoption of APM in developer and QA scrums. You can hear the full session on Wednesday, November 16th at 11:20 AM.
